In many areas, roads have been dug up to lay cablesOver 8,300 BSNL phone lines have gone dead owing to digging of roads at various places in the city for various reasons. But the good part is that BSNL authorities have taken it upon themselves to take up damage control and restore the snapped cables fast.Phone cables have been damaged at 48 places in the city affecting as many as 8,362 phone lines. Of these, 3,000 lines have been damaged in the central zone, 2,100 in the east zone, 2,500 in the north zone and 500 in the west zone.
The worst-affected is the Geeta Mandir area where there has been a lot of digging activity by the AMC and the pits have not been filled up.Subscribers have not been the only losers with the lines going dead, BSNL too has had to forgo Rs 4 crore in the form of revenue loss and higher maintenance cost.
“The optical fibre which is used in the cables has been severely damaged and will be expensive to replace. We are claiming the loss from AMC and hope to recover it,” said BSNL’s principal GM (Ahmedabad telecom) S K Bhandari.“The AMC workers are reckless in their work and do not co-operate with us to avoid damage to cables. But now after several meetings with the authorities, AMC commissioner I P Gautam has assured us that they will intimate us before taking up work along roads.”
