Ahmedabad Traffic Police have stepped in to end the turf war between regular auto rickshaws and G-Auto at the airport and rid passengers of haggling over fares.
The cops have teamed up with Ahmedabad airport authorities and Nirmal Foundation – which currently runs the G-Auto service at the domestic terminal – to put a proper system in place, one that also makes room for regular autorickshaw drivers. Till now, only G-Auto drivers were allowed to operate from airport premises.
The token system will do away with passengers and rickshaw drivers haggling over prices. Rickshaws will have to stand in queue now and charge as per meter
» Under the new system, already being implemented at Delhi airport, the autos will have to stand in a queue near the domestic terminal.
» The rickshaw driver is required to collect the token from the traffic booth at the terminal. The passenger will have to get into the rickshaw assigned to him by the cop.
» The driver cannot refuse a passenger and can charge him only as per meter rates approved by the RTO.
If he violates any of the aforementioned conditions, he will be blacklisted by the traffic police. This means, he will be barred from operating out of the airport premises.
“We have worked out a new plan with Nirmal Foundation and airport authorities to cater to passengers. A token system will be implemented to ensure orderly parking and single line entry/exit mechanism. Apart from G-Auto, even regular rickshaws can line-up at the parking area. However, they cannot charge passengers as per their will; they will have to charge as per the meter rate,” said Nilesh Jajadia, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic
He added: “According to the new plan, passengers and auto-drivers will not come face- to-face with each other and therefore there will be no confrontation over fares. Both passengers and rickshaw drivers will have to adhere to the token system. Also, rickshaws will have to line-up near the traffic booth and won’t be allowed to jump the queue. The driver can neither refuse a passenger, nor overcharge him. If a passenger lodges a complaint against a driver, his service at the airport will be terminated.”
Rickshaw drivers who do not adhere to the rules will be blacklisted by traffic cops at the airport
The cops are preparing signboards to guide the passengers to the traffic booth. “The system should be in place by mid-September. We are also working on a revenue sharing model for benefit of traffic police, airport authorities and Nirmal Foundation,” said Jajadia.
“This system was in place earlier too, but there was nobody to supervise it. I appreciate and welcome the move by the traffic police. With they in charge of the administration, the system should work smoothly,” said Nirmal Kumar, managing trustee of Nirmal Foundation which runs G-Auto.
Even Ahmedabad Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Sangharsh Samiti lauded the move. Samiti’s vice president Raj Sirke said, “For the past several months, regular auto drivers are not being allowed to operate from the domestic terminal. This, because of frequent scuffles with G-Auto drivers. Now, with the traffic police at the helm of affairs, the development is a win-win situation for both G-Auto drivers and regular rickshawallahs.”
Ahmedabad Airport Director Anuj Aggarwal said, “We want to enforce a system that eases passenger woes. We are planning to allot rickshaw driver the space in front of the domestic terminal. Traffic cops will apprise passengers of the new system. We are working on the modalities and a final decision will be taken in a week.”
