Like Kangana Ranaut’s salwar-kameez from Tanu weds Manu? How about Anushka Sharma’s kurtis from Band Baaja Baraat? Or do you want Vidya Balan’s trademark blouses: elbow-cut sleeves with zari borders? All you need to do is go to jail.

Amdavadis can bring their fabric to Bhajiya House at the RTO between 9 am and 5 pm. They can either give old clothes for measurement or get fresh ones taken

We know women are capable of committing violence if they want an item on sale that another person has laid her eyes on, but we are not talking of murder here. If you have a design in mind, inmates at Sabarmati Central Jail can stitch it into reality for you. And at a lesser rate than what others in the market would charge.

Forty inmates of the jail’s tailoring department stitch everything from fashionwear to suits, from blouses to salwar-kameez and jhabbas. Everyday, they sew 15-20 creations. The charges are Rs 50 for shirts, Rs 70 for trousers and salwar-kameez, Rs 100 for woollen jackets and Rs 150 for safari suits.

They even stitch bags.

Explaining the process, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) P C Thakur said, “Amdavadis can bring cloth material to Bhajiya House at the RTO between 9 am and 5 pm. They can either bring a stitched garment for measurement or get fresh ones taken.”

Quality is not a cause of concern. Yet, the inmates will enhance their skills at a workshop to be held by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) next week.

Only two of the 40 inmates were tailors by profession. The others learnt the skill in jail.

Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association will teach inmates to weave cloth

Murder convict Maji Ullah Sultan Ahmed spends his entire day at the tailoring unit. He says, “I was a tailor before I was jailed. When I learnt there is a tailoring department here, I expressed my desire to the jail authorities and they allowed me to join the unit.”

He added, “Sometimes people bring their designs to us, sometimes we suggest patterns. After undergoing training with NIFT, we expect to do better.”

Thakur said, “Tailors here stitch clothes for a cheaper rate than other tailors in the city. Now, with well-known institutes helping inmates hone their skills, we will have some of the best tailors in the city.”

Jail Superintendent R J Parghi said, “The entire jail is furnished with articles made by inmates. Be it furniture, curtains or towels, the inmates make them all. Since I joined this jail, I have not got my clothes stitched from outside.”

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association (ATIRA) is also planning to teach prisoners how to weave cotton cloth. This will be sold at the jail for Rs 65 per metre.
