Stories of sexual abuse and other heart-rending tales of women prisoners form part of a magazine titled Kasturba ni Kotadia Thi published by the Jashwant Thakkar Memorial Trust. In the magazine’s second edition, a woman prisoner describes her abuse by family and those she trusted.
Edited and designed by Naushil Mehta, who scripted What’s Your Rashi? starring Priyanka Chopra, the book has been brought out by the Centre for Social Justice.
The woman prisoner who writes anonymously in the article titled, Aa Mui Lagan ni Season, states that her mother had to work as a cook after coming to Ahmedabad from Hajipara in Wadhvan. From her hard-earned savings, her mother brought his unemployed father an auto-rickshaw, she says. He went on to buy five more autos, but also became addicted to alcohol and also took to gambling.
“Every night my father came home drunk and slept next to me. He used to touch me in an inappropriate manner. Frightened, I told my mother but she did not believe me. I left my house and fell in love with a boy who robbed auto passengers. I was framed for the offence and went to jail. When I came out, another man tempted me with love. He went on to murder someone and I was charged with the crime,” the woman states in her article.
“It is difficult to narrate the plight of these women prisoners in the magazine. Some of the words they use to describe the abuse are indescribable in print. Women are not toys. They should be handled with care and dignity. Otherwise these crimes won’t allow them to progress,” said Aditi Desai, director of the trust working with women prisoners.
A collection of Gujarati poems by prisoners from jails across the state was also brought out in book called Karagruhmaan Kalarav that was released by Jail Minister Dilip Sanghani in presence of ADGP, prisons, P C Thakur, the jail superintendent and others in the jail. The book contains two poems by suspended cop D G Vanzara who is an accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
