Traffic police bikes fitted with beacons, sirens and a public address system à la NYPD will be spotted on Ahmedabad roads by the end of this month

Red-light jumpers and speedsters, get ready for some lights, sound and action. Traffic cops have found a cool new way to rein in offenders and enforce rules on city roads. The department plans to fit 72 bikes with sirens, beacons and a public address system to help cops keep up with the burgeoning automobile traffic in the city. Their inspiration: The motorcycle squad of the New York Police Department.

“Not everyone who jumps the signal stops when the traffic cop asks him to. Some even injure others while trying to escape the cop. In such cases, a bike equipped with sirens and beacon lights will help the cop chase and swoop on the offender,” said Nilesh Jajadia, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).

The siren will have three tones and can be adjusted for warning, overtaking or pursuit. It will help cops manoeuvre between cars in heavy traffic to capture the offender. Also, a siren can be heard a long time before the bike becomes visible. This gives drivers more than enough time to react appropriately. There have been several instances in the past where an offender has beaten up a traffic cop before making good his escape. With a new system expected to be in place by the end of this month, law-breakers will not be able to outsmart cops.

“The bikes will have two beacon lights in the front, near the foot guard and two in the rear. The adjustable siren will warn other road users so that they can make way for the cops. The microphone on the vehicle will be used to direct or control traffic in case of jams and make announcements when deemed necessary. Tenders for installation of the equipment will be issued soon,” Jajadia added.

In 2010, as many as 47,064 people were caught for jumping signal and Rs 28,65,625 collected from them. A total of 46,558 people were fined Rs 68,81, 425 for dangerous driving.

FAILED ATTEMPT

Earlier, Ahmedabad city police had experimented with the idea of sirens and beacons on bikes, but it proved to be a flop. When asked what is the guarantee the system will now succeed, Jajadia said, “When a new system is installed, the user should be given proper training. That is precisely what we plan to do. The cops will be trained in use and maintenance of the modified bikes.”

About NYPD motorcycle squad

The NYPD Highway Patrol’s origins begin in 1911 with the formation of the NYPD’s first motorcycle squad. It was formed to meet the challenges of handling increasing traffic danger concomitant with the rise of automobile use. The unit—then simply known as the Motorcycle Squad—was enlarged as automobile traffic and speeding arose as major problems for the city, and in 1929, the unit was expanded to include armoured motorcycles for use in anti-gang activities by the NYPD.
