How many times have you cribbed about the deplorable traffic on city roads? Well, here’s a chance to set things right. Next time you see a traffic violator, whip out your mobile camera and start clicking.
What next? Upload the photographs on Ahmedabad Traffic Police page on Facebook to take the offenders to task.
If you do not have an FB account, mail the photographs to ahmd.trafficpolice@gmail.com, says DCP (Traffic) Nilesh Jajadia
The traffic police created the page on Thursday evening. Amdavadis can use the page not only to keep our roads safe but also to name and shame bribe-seeking cops. Users are required to mention full details, with date, time, place and vehicle number so that the violations like wrong parking, signal jumping and lane-cutting can be confirmed.
Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha said, “In today’s technological age, mobile phones can be used to capture corrupt and illegal activities. A committed citizen can help law enforcement agencies by forwarding photographs of criminal activities.”
The photographic evidence will be sent to Regional Transport Office where the vehicle registration number will be used to trace the offender. If reporting a corrupt policeman, the time, date and place will be matched with the duty roster to identify the cop.
E-mail the proof
If you do not have a Facebook account, fret not. You can mail the incriminating photographs to ahmd.trafficpolice@gmail.com. “We have opened more channels to touch maximum number of people, mostly youths who are tech-savvy. We will protect the identity of those who mail us information. Once we check authenticity of evidence with help from computer experts, action will be taken against errant drivers,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nilesh Jajadia.
Defaulters are likely to get poked or tagged by their friends on the social networking site. “This will create added pressure. It will make people think twice about jumping the signal,” said another official.
Feedback forum
In its second phase, the cops will answer queries raised by Amdavadis regarding choked roads and traffic chaos. Amdavadis can also post suggestions, complaints and feedback to improve traffic management.
“We will reserve one person to constantly monitor the updates. In the second phase, data will be passed on to traffic control room so that cops can be immediately diverted to the troubled spot,” Jajadia said.
The decision to start the Facebook page and get people involved in traffic management was taken after the grand success of such campaigns in Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh.
