Traffic police will give breathalyser test to those suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol; details of those found guilty will be sent to RTO for cancellation of licence

Isn’t it an irony of sorts that in a state considered ‘dry’, the traffic police have to penalise errant drivers who drive under the influence? Well, the good-intentioned cops have the safety of the driver and other commuters in mind while recommending cancellation of the licence of those caught driving in an inebriated state.

Darshan Vora, a private company employee, was asked to take the breathalyser test on Wednesday night. He tested negative

Going beyond the earlier advice to drivers, ‘Don’t drink and drive’, the traffic police have taken a step forward to ensure that it is better to put a stop to drunk driving by asking the Regional Transport Office to cancel the licence of those found guilty.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Nilesh Jajadia issued directions in this regard to all those manning the four interceptor vehicles, asking them to use breathalysers (a device that can measure how much alcohol is present in a person’s blood) to keep a check on those driving under the influence of alcohol.

“I have issued directions to all interceptors. Those suspected of drunk driving will be asked to take a breathalyser test. If found drunk (with.05 per cent or above of alcohol level in blood), the person’s details along with a letter recommending cancellation of his licence will be sent to the RTO,” the DCP said.

Jajadia said, “Under Section 203 of Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), the traffic police or any police officer can conduct breath test for alcohol on a suspect. Under Section 185 of the MVA, the person can be booked for violation of the traffic law and under Section 19 of the Act, the police can suspend the offender’s licence.”

“This is for the first time that we have decided to write to the RTO to cancel the offender’s licence,” he said.

The drive began on Wednesday evening with an interceptor vehicle personnel checking drivers on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway. Darshan Vora, a manager at Harsha Engineers Limited who lives at Judges Bungalow, was asked to take a breathalyser test by the traffic cops led by PSI G V Raval at Iskcon crossroads. Vora tested negative, but appreciated the move by the traffic cops.

Vora told Mirror, “This is the need of the hour. The youth have become uncontrolled. They ride bikes and drive four-wheelers rashly, forgetting in the process that there are others on the road. Those who drive under the influence of liquor will be caught. This will ensure the safety of the common man who won’t mind undergoing such tests.”

Five breathalysers have been provided to the interceptor personnel and more such devices are being procured for effective policing. “We are preparing a proposal to buy more breathalysers,” Jajadia said.

Ahmedabad RTO J N Bhatt too has chipped in to keep the roads safe. Bhatt said, “We are ready to extend our support to the traffic police. We appreciate their initiative. Once we receive a letter from the traffic police against an offender, we will cancel the person’s licence for at least 6 months. We want to make the roads safe and ensure that people follow the rules.”
