Ticketless travelling on the BRTS will be fine, come September. The Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, which runs the bus rapid transit system, will be issuing smart cards and coins instead of tickets to passengers. These will be used to operate flap barriers to be installed at all BRTS stations.

Commuters can walk into a bus station and wave their card (circled) before a sensor placed on the barrier to open it. When the passenger gets off, he/she must flash the card again so sensors can compute and deduct the fare as per kilometres travelled

This system will be made operational at Nehrunagar BRTS stand on Wednesday.

The entire project will be installed for Rs 20 crore by Spanish firm GVM Vayam in a month or two, say AJL officials.

Confirming this, AJL Executive Director U C Padia said, “We will set up the first flap barrier at Nehrunagar stand on Tuesday night. We will test it for a month, then extend the service to other bus stands. However, we will not remove the turnstiles that were installed earlier. We will keep both, turnstiles and flap barriers, operational.”

He added, “The project cost of Rs 20 crore also includes cost of control room, hardware, software and other equipment.”

AJL General Manager Harshad Solanki said, “We will be buying 1 lakh smart cards and 1 lakh coins for passengers. We have directed the company to finish the project in two months.”

According to AJL officials, GVM Vayam will be given 60 per cent payment in the first year and 20 per cent every year thereafter so that the company cannot wash its hands if the project fails.

How it works

Flap barriers are sensor-based systems that can be operated through coins and smart cards. The cards are issued for frequent travellers while coins are for one-time use.

Commuters can walk into a bus station and wave their card before a sensor placed on the barrier to open it. When the passenger gets off, he/she must flash the card again at the exit point barrier, which computes and deducts the fare as per the kilometres travelled. All this in a matter of seconds.

There is one drawback, though. If a smart card gets stolen, it can be used by anyone till it runs out of credit. There is nothing on the card to identify its user so the thief will never get caught.

After getting off the bus, passenger has to drop coin into a slot to be allowed out of station
The system works the same way for passengers issued coins. However, after getting off the bus, the passenger has to drop the coin into a slot to be allowed out of the station.

Trying to jump across the barrier without swiping card/coin will set off alarm bells. Two security guards will also be stationed at the entrance to nab violators.

More bus stands

At present, there are 61 bus stands along BRTS route. Six more will be added on the stretch from Vadaj to Dilli Darwaza. Turnstiles, installed by Kaizen Engineering Systems Pvt Ltd, exist at 25 stations. The cost of each turnstile was Rs 1.5 lakh while flap barriers cost Rs 63,000 each. Around 1.25 lakh passengers travel by BRTS everyday.
