A rape convict, a sharpshooter and alleged murderer hit the right frequency while auditioning for ‘compering and news reading’ course to be conducted by the Gujarat Vidyapeeth. Over 100 undertrials and convicts appeared for the tryouts on Tuesday evening. Thirty-six got through.

These include Sajal Jain who is behind bars in the Bijal Joshi rape case, Shabbir Hussain Hussain Miyan, an alleged sharpshooter with the Latif gang, and Pranav Patel, who allegedly kidnapped and killed a 15-year-old boy in Sanand last year.

Shabbir gave his best shot in Hindi, Jain auditioned in Hindi and English while Pranav Patel chose to forgo the script and speak about Hanuman Jayanti which was celebrated on Monday.

Held in the jail’s tele-medicine room, the auditions were judged by Maulin Munshi, programme director of All-India Radio. “The inmates were enthusiastic about appearing for the voice test. We made them read scripts written for radio jockeys, Akashwani announcements and news headlines. We also got them to compere a stage show and read chapters from novels and plays. Some of them were simply superb,” said Munshi.

Sandhya Thaker, head of human resources at Gujarat Vidyapeeth, said, “The chosen ones will undergo voice training soon. The course is held over a month on alternate days. But Vidyapeeth will conduct the classes daily for the inmates and finish the first phase in 15 days. The prisoners will be trained in compering, newsreading, dramatics and radio jockeying.”

Munshi said, “We will bring well-known RJs from private FM channels to guide the chosen prisoners. They have assured us of their support for welfare and rehabilitation of inmates.”

Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) P C Thakur said, “There has been no discrimination in selection of inmates. It is upto them how they want to spend their time inside. Vidyapeeth is helping us rehabilitate inmates by introducing courses that will help them get white collar jobs once they are free.”

After completion of training, when inmates joins the society with a certificate in hand, it will become easier for them to get a job. They could become a professional announcer, radio jockey or news reader.

Prisoners will be trained in compering, news reading etc
Explaining more about the course, Thaker said, “Like our courses in dairy science and organic farming, we are sure this course will also be fruitful. These prisoners will be taught how to pronounce words properly, breathe properly, tune microphones etc.”

In the second phase, Vidyapeeth plans to take the prisoners to professional institutes or studios where they will receive better training. This, if the institute founded by Mahatma Gandhi gets permission to take the prisoners out of the jail. “In any case, we will give them the best of training as some of the best voices in the trade will guide them in jail,” Thaker said
