Last Saturday a couple returning home in a shared auto-rickshaw was threatened with a knife and looted near Tapovan circle that falls between Koba Circle and Sabarmati. They were forced to hand over four gold bangles and a ring costing Rs 42,000, besides Rs 3,000 in cash.
Mirror carried out a test- drive to find out if auto drivers in the city can be trusted. Amdawad no rickshaw walo turned out to be honest in 80 per cent cases. In the test-drive conducted at five different places of the city, one of the two reporters left a bag in the auto with photo copies of their identity card inside the bag to establish it was theirs.
Four of the five rickshaw drivers turned out to be honest.
Ashram Road
Name: Rajubhai Marwadi, 27
Result: Dishonest
Distance: Income Tax to Butasingh crossroads
One of the reporters pretended to forget his bag in Rajubhai’s auto, but he just drove off. Another reporter followed him, stopped him and asked him to return the bag. When asked why he did so, Rajubhai said he did not know the passenger had left his bag in the auto. He has been driving auto for the past 15 years.
Drive-In Road
Name: Ayubkhan Pathan, 36
Result: Honest
Distance: Helmet crossroads to Gurukul
After paying the fare, when the reporter was leaving, Pathan stopped him and asked him for whom he had left the bag. He was told to take it away. We appreciated his stand as this was for the first time any passenger had left his luggage in his auto in the past seven years that he has been driving one.

Name: Dinesh Rajput, 48 Yrs
Result: Honest

Initially, Rajput did not see the bag in the back seat, but when the other reporter on a bike drew his attention to it, he did not think twice before stopping the passenger who was walking ahead and asked him to take his bag. He said he has been driving an auto for the past 20 years and has come across numerous incidents of people leaving their valuables in his auto and he returning them.

Name: Vinod Rawal, 46
Result: Honest
Distance: Sanjeevani Hospital to Bodakdev
When the reporter was leaving the place, Rawal stopped him and reminded him of his bag. He said that this is not the first time that some passengers had forgotten their luggage. It has happened often and each time he has returned the belongings.
Judges Bungalow
Name: Hidayat Shaikh, 30
Result: Honest
Distance: Judges Bungalow to Mansi crossroads
Shaikh does not own the auto he drives, but returned the bag that we left in his vehicle. He ensures that no passenger leaves anything in his auto when they get down. According to him, his auto earns him enough money for him and his family, so he does not need to cheat people.
