Is the mosquito menace robbing you of precious sleep? Want to raise a stink over unclean streets and overflowing drains? Just pick up your phone and register your complaint directly with civic officers. Municipal Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra has given out cellphone numbers of 12 senior officers who will redress grievances of residents in all six civic zones.

Municipal Commissioner
The civic chief has already directed his officers to be vigilant about cleanliness in their respective zones. He allowed their names and numbers to be published to build a bridge between the common man and the corporation.

Currently, anyone who faces a problem has to go to the zonal office and submit an application. The officer in charge will send his subordinates to verify the problem and solve it. Another method is to lodge the complaint on the AMC website.

The civic chief’s move will make redressal process faster.

Mohapatra said, “The officers will deal with complaints related to dumpyards, uncleared garbage bins, uneven roads and other issues related to basic civic facilities. Our job is to solve people’s problems and we should always be available to them. If the public has the contact number of senior officers, it reassures them that their complaints will be heard.”

He added, “Since I have taken charge as the civic chief here, I have found that problems that reach my officers get sorted out fast. This step will ensure that the staff is prompt in addressing civic issues.”

The officers will keep a logbook of complaints to make sure that the complaints are being addressed.

Fever clinics set up

Meanwhile, as cases of malaria are on the rise, the AMC has started fever clinics at V S Hospital, L G Hospital and Shardaben Hospital under the National Malaria Drug Policy 2010. Twelve laboratory technicians have been deployed at the clinics to help detect cases early so that effective treatment can be provided to patients. Fever clinics have also been set up at urban health centres and civic dispensaries.

Over 1,500 AMC workers are going door to door, conducting started an intra-domestic mosquito breeding survey, to get an idea of mosquito breeding in city homes. Senior AMC officials say that contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes breeding on dirty water or on stagnant water collected in streets, are not the most harmful ones. “Malaria and dengue-causing mosquitoes breed on clean water, like that stored in buckets in bathrooms. If you store water at home, ensure it is covered,” said a senior health official.

The workers are also using fogging machines, treating stagnant water with insecticides to bring down the density of larvae and curb the menace
