The Gujarat University Convention Centre is buzzing with activity. Work is on at breakneck pace to ready it for Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day fast beginning Saturday. While fasting might be a trend revived by anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, who may have inspired Modi to undergo a fast, the CM nevertheless does not plan to adopt Anna’s style and sleep on the dais.

R&B Department fixed a three-star airconditioner from a reputed brand, set up a carved wooden bed and folding partition inside the room. They also fixed a new sink and commode in the attached bathroom

Instead a room, approximately 15x20 square feet, on the left of the exhibition hall’s entrance is being prepped for the CM to catch some shut-eye. A special bed, with leaf motifs carved on the legs, sides as well as the headboard, has been installed in the room for his comfort.

Workers from the Road and Building Department were seen fixing a three-star airconditioner from a reputed brand inside the room, which has an attached bathroom. They worked hard over two days to colour the room and upgrade the water and drainage connections. “The workers have installed a new pipeline for a shower. They have also fixed a new sink and commode in the bathroom.”

The room also sports a wood-carved folding partition. The divider screen sections off part of the room to create a changing area.

The room was being zealously guarded by five officials seated in chairs outside entrance, totally unaware that another door near the electrical room led to the room.

The R&B Department also spruced up a two-storied room on the right side of the entrance to accommodate VVIPs. The room now holds several sofas, chairs, tables and beds where the guests can rest. It is reported that BJP leader L K Advani, who is an MP from Gandhinagar, and Arun Jaitley, Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, will leave for Ahmedabad on Saturday morning to attend the fast. Other party leaders likely to attend the fast are BJP General Secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad, spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain and general secretary Vijay Goel.

Attempts to contact government spokesperson Jaynarayan Vyas as well as the Chief Minister’s Office for official version failed.

Executive Engineer (R&B) S H Trivedi said, “We were asked to ready two rooms at the university exhibition hall. We do not know whom it is for.”

Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Parimal Trivedi arrived at the venue along with Estate Department officials at 1.30 pm and stayed till late. He checked the arrangements made at the building.

Trivedi told Mirror, “The room to the right of the exhibition hall entrance has been reserved for VVIPs. The room on the left is for Modi. It is a waiting room that has been refurbished by the R&B Department. PWD engineers came to the venue at 8 pm and checked the AC vent and systems to make sure that if the need arises, the airconditioners would work alright.”

Asked about youth participation in the event, Trivedi said, “I have called a meeting of principals on Friday. They will send collegians to take part in the event and make it a success.”

Asked why he was involving the university in a political programme, Trivedi told mediapersons: “This is a state programme we should feel proud of. The university had joined the government to host other programmes earlier, too. If need be, the varsity will even bear the entire cost of the event.”
