Airport fuel station’s senior terminal manager doesn’t grant audience to men who are not well groomed; there is no such rule for women, though

Only clean shaven men with short and oiled hair allowed’. This is not a demand made by women in the city but by the Senior Terminal Manager Sujansinh Kumre at the aviation fuel station in Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport. Yes, any person who wants an audience with Kumre will have to be presentable and ‘not stink’ as the AM reporter found out.

This reporter heard about the ‘strict cleanliness and presentability’ rule at the airport fuel station from an Mirror reader and decided to check out. He went to the fuel station where Kumre has his office.

The reporter was well dressed with one exception. He had a two-day old stubble on his chin. The guard of the fuel station refused him entry because he had failed to shave. Later, AM lensman Manish Mistry tried to meet Kumre. But he was refused admission to the premises because he was wearing sandals.

Amused by these weird rules, AM contacted Kumre. He said, “There is no such rule. These rules have been imposed by me as I don’t like unclean and stinking people. I am part of the hospitality industry. We are expected to remain clean at all hours. So it’s natural that we want the people whom we meet to be also clean and presentable.”

When asked about the insistence on wearing shoes, Kumre said, “Ours is a licence area. Fuel is stored here. We are supposed to wear shoes in this area. The rule is to prevent anyone from getting hurt in case of an accident.”

Beards stink!
So what about not allowing men with beard on the fuel station premise? “I believe that bearded men stink. So I insist that men who are visiting the station must be clean shaven and well-groomed. I firmly believe in the slogan Chhote baal, sar pe tel aur baatein bandh. In fact, I have instructed the guards at the entrance to not allow anyone who is not well-dressed and groomed to enter the station. Whoever enters my office will have to be properly dressed and presentable,” Kumre said.

Special washrooms
The cleanliness rules are so strict that special arrangements have been made for truck drivers who bring in the fuel. “The rules are uniform for all. Even for the truck drivers. We have made special arrangements for them. There are special bathrooms and washrooms for them. Unclean and unkempt people will not be tolerated,” said Kumre. The same rule is applicable to sweepers too. He said that stringent rules helped them gain good grading from the airport authorities.

No rules for women
However, Kumre relaxes his cleanliness rules for women. “They can come as they please. We can’t ask them to cut their hair or tie it. And unbraided hair makes them look beautiful. So how can I impose such strict rules on them?” said Kumre.
