Congress leader Rahul Gandhi may be the nation’s ‘leading’ choice, but the next generation of Amdavadis stand firmly behind our Chief Minister Narendra Modi. In a Mirror survey for the most recognised person in the country, 84 out of 100 students from 10 city schools picked Modi ahead of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare. Rahul Gandhi lagged far behind with just 27 students identifying him correctly.
Mirror picked up six personalities — two each from the field of politics, Bollywood and social sector. The photographs of Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Anna Hazare and Mahatma Gandhi were shown to 100 students of Class 5.
Rahul Gandhi - 27/100 Narendra Modi - 84/100 Mahatma Gandhi - 98/100
With 96 students naming him, Bachchan stood second on the list, closely followed by Katrina ‘Sheela’ Kaif whose item number did the trick for 92 students. The impact of Bollywood was beaten only by ‘Gandhi Bapu’ who topped the ‘most recognised’ list with 98 tags. Anna Hazare left his impression on 75 students.
Of the two students who failed to recall Mahatma Gandhi, one tagged him as Jawaharlal Nehru and the other as Anna.
Anna Hazare - 75/100 Amitabh Bachhan - 96/100 Katrina Kaif - 92/100
Surprising finds
Mirror reporters approached schools affiliated to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) and International Baccalaureate. Photographs of the six personalities were shown to five boys and five girls each from GLS (Law Garden), St Kabir (Drive-In), Calorx School (Shilaj), Prakash School (Vastrapur), Sheth C N Vidyalaya (Ambawadi), Mahatma Gandhi International School (Mithakhali), Diwan Ballubhai School (Kankaria), Rachna (Shahibaug), municipal school (Naranpura) and municipal school (Shahpur).
The survey threw up some surprises. Rahul Gandhi may not have made his place in the heart of Amdavadi students, but his father has. Out of 10 students at St Kabir, three identified him as Rajiv Gandhi. This mistake was repeated by students of Prakash, Calorx and Rachna, too. A student of C N Vidyalaya identified Rahul as the son of Indira Gandhi while another from MGIS tagged him as Sonia Gandhi. A student from Shahpur municipal school called him Nehru Gandhi.
Rahul can probably take heart in the fact that a student of Calorx mistook Modi for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and another from Prakash School wrongly identified him as Anna Hazare.
Several students slipped in identifying Anna Hazare. Surprisingly, he was mistaken for Jawaharlal Nehru, and not Mahatma Gandhi with whom he was constantly compared to. A student from Shahpur municipal school tagged him as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel while another from the Naranpura school thought he was BJP leader L K Advani.
Big B was mistaken for his son Abhishek by a Calorx student. And, Katrina Kaif was incorrectly tagged as Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor. Most students knew her as Sheela from the item song Sheela ki jawani and not as Katrina.
School Students who identified all six photographs correctly
MGIS 4/10
Rachna 4/10
Prakash 3/10
Diwan Ballubhai 3/10
GLS 3/10
St Kabir 2/10
C N Vidyalaya 2/10
Calorx School 1/10
NARANPURA Municipal School 1/10
Shahpur Municipal School 0/10
Total recall
Four students from MGIS and Rachna identified all the six photographs correctly. Three each from Prakash, Diwani Ballubhai and GLS, and two each from St Kabir and C N Vidyalaya got it right. While one student each from Calorx and Naranpura municipal school guessed the names of all personalities correctly, no student from Shahpur municipal school managed the feat.
Aryan Sarvate, a student of Rachna School, said, “Most of these personalities are in the news for some reason or another. I identified Anna from newspaper reports. Many people wearing Gandhi topis printed with Anna’s name stood in support of his fight against corruption.”
Akarsh Cherian, a student of Prakash school, said, “Actors Bachchan and Katrina are always in the news. I knew about Anna Hazare due to the fast he undertook. He was all over newspapers and TV till a couple of days ago.”
Said Brinda Shah, a student of St Kabir school, “I watch movies and also read newspapers. Modi is our CM. I watch news on TV along with my parents and am aware of current events.”
