An increasing number of inmates is showing keenness for beauty products, cosmetics, and they spend substantial part of their earning on these products: Jail authorities

The famous scenes of Bollywood flicks portraying long-term serving prisoners in shabby looks may soon be passé, at least when it comes to depicting the inmates lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail.
A growing awareness amongst the inmates about improving their looks and their fondness for cosmetic and beauty products has led to a greater demand of these products in the jail. Authorities mention that an increasing number of prisoners, spending a substantial part for their earning in the jail on buying these products, inside the prison canteen.
“Products of daily needs including those helping in improving or maintaining looks are being sold in accordance with the provisions of law in the prison. The prisoners can buy them according to their choice from the money they get by working in the jail premises. Their fondness for beauty and cosmetic products can be seen from the growing demand of these products in the jail,’’ said P C Thakur, Additional Director General of Police(Prisons).
While amongst the men it’s fairness creams and sandal soaps which are in demand, for women it’s branded talcum power and shampoos which are gaining popularity.

Jail officials mention that the a good number of male inmates now use the exclusively-for-men fairness cream. “They are no longer interested in using the women’s fairness creams. Most of the prisoners are buying Fair and Handsome and those who are not, they are borrowing from others to use it,’’ says an official claiming in the months from April to June end, the number of brands sold crossed over 500.
Sandal soap, Santoor
Though inmates have a choice of about four brands for choosing the soaps, Santoor remains the popular choice for most of them. Officials disclose that between April to June, the inmates used over 3,530 Santoor soaps. The acclaimed choice of Bollywood stars Lux comes second, with other brands like Dove, Medimix, Hamam, Dettol, Liril,Rexona, Lifebouy, Diana and Nirma Beauty soap too being picked up by the inmates.
Of hair care and shampoo
An increasing number of women prisoners are showing their fondness for smooth and silky hair, which is clearly depicted in the sale figures of Clinic Plus shampoo. In a span of three months almost 21,900 sachets of Clinic Plus were bought and consumed.
Head and Shoulder remains the second most sought after brand amongst the women and even some men. Besides, about 520 bottles of Dabur Amla hair oil have been used during this period. Besides, Hair and Care, Navratna, Maha Bhringraj and Hair and Care are also in demand.
Also from amongst the brands available in the jail premises, Ponds Talcum Powder is preferred the most, over other brands like Dermi Cool and Itch Guard.
